I was watching Evening Magazine tonight and the segment about the Pantages theater in Tacoma jostled my memory. My former son-in-law, Dean Lentgis, Seattle, is a descendant of Alexander Pantages and his mother Mary sat in my dining room one day when we lived at Harper and had some interesting stories to tell about her uncle Alex. She and her sister, Nitsa, both worked for their uncle when he was signing up vaudeville acts in the old days. I asked Mary, Did you ever meet any of the stars?" and Mary said, "Yes, I knew them all. I had the job of writing about them for the newspapers." She remembered George Burns and Gracie Allen when they appeared here. As for the vaudeville dancers, she said they wore less when they performed on stage at the Pantages than they show on stage in the Las Vegas stage shows today.
Mary was the typical reserved, Greek lady, polite and gracious, one who you'd never expect to frequent a vaudeville performance with near naked show girls. I still miss her.
Happy Easter everybody!
Rosie
